To find out if you have HIV you will need to take a blood or oral swab test. For the majority of people, HIV testing will be accurate at six weeks after possible infection.
There are three types of HIV tests:
- At our Auckland Clinic we offer FREE INSTI Multiplex rapid testing which tests for both HIV and Syphilis at the same time. This involves a pin prick to the finger and the results are in 60 seconds.
Drop-in Testing days and times are:
Wednesday and Thursday, 3 pm - 6 pm. No appointments needed.
Last Saturday of every month
(September 28th, October 26th, November 30th December 14th)
11 am - 3 pm. No appointments needed.
Testing outside of these times requires an appointment.

- HIV Home Test is an oral swab. A kit is delivered in a discreet package to any address in New Zealand. The test uses an oral swab (no finger pricks or blood) Results will show in 20 minutes. You can order one online here.
Please note: HIV cannot be passed on through kissing or saliva. The oral rapid test purely detects the antibodies in oral fluid made by the immune system in response to HIV infection.

Sexual Health Drop-In. A free, discreet, and confidential sexual health service for all people.
These clinics are hosted in partnership with Auckland Sexual Health Services, the Burnett Foundation Aotearoa, and Positive Women. The clinics offer HIV testing for MSM (through the Burnett Foundation), for heterosexual women & men and transwomen (through Positive Women) and STI testing for all (through Auckland Sexual Health).
No appointment is necessary, simply drop in and see one of the friendly teams! This clinic is an open and destigmatising space for anyone and everyone and is free of judgement.
When and Where?
These drop-in clinics occur on the first Tuesday of each month from 1 to 4pm throughout the academic year (Coming soon 5th March).
They are all held in Workshop 101 in the Kate Edger Information Commons (KEIC Workshop101).
- Blood tests done by a GP or clinic. Results will take 1-2 weeks. You will need to talk to your doctor or sexual health clinic if you would like to know more.
