Fostering healthy cognitive ageing in people living with HIV

The population of people aged 50 years and older living with HIV now represents the majority of people living with HIV worldwide. An increasing number of older people living with HIV are experiencing premature, accentuated, and sometimes accelerated cognitive or brain ageing. Emerging evidence suggests that older people living with HIV might be at up to 58% greater risk of all-type dementia (or major neurocognitive disorder) than people without HIV, although the risk is probably multifactorial depending on the degree of HIV control and the presence of various comorbidities. Within the next 30 years, many people living with HIV will reach their 70s, an age at which prevalence and incidence of dementia strongly increases.
