Ageing Positively with HIV in Aotearoa New Zealand
Positive Women Inc. is very excited to announce that the Tu Tangata Rite, Ageing Positively, website is up and running. This was the result of nearly 18 months of very hard work by Abby Leota, Milly Stewart and the Roopu Kaihono (Advisory Group of people aged 50+), Lianne, Darren, Joana, Geoff, Heather and Damien. The project was a joint venture between Positive Women Inc. Toitū te Ao and the Burnett Foundation.
The website is a resource for people living with HIV and for people working in the aged care sector. For the aged care workers there is also a quiz which can be taken at the end. People will receive a certificate of completion if they pass the quiz. This learning may be accepted by some industry training associations.
The section for Kaimahi, or Support workers, if full of information about how to care for a person living with HIV with dignity and respect.
Information for people living and again with HIV have been divided into four categories. These are:
-
Physical Wellbeing
-
Mental and emotional Wellbeing
-
Spiritual Wellbeing
-
Family and social connections
These categories were identified as key areas of concern by participants who took part in a research project carried out in 202/3 and included in the Ngā Taipakeke o te Urutā HIV | Ageing with HIV report released in 2023.
Since the website has been launched it has been presented at the National Aged Care Association Conference held in Auckland on 23 October 2024 which was attended by over 300 people.
We did a webinar in February 2025 to around 30 members of the Home and Community Health Association (NZCHA). The session was recorded and forwarded to one of NZCHA’s affiliate members ‘Careerforce’ who have added the link to their web resources resource library. They will point trainees to this as a resource and will promote the resource through their ‘Skills for good’ network, who have added the site to their internal training.
If you are living with HIV, at any age, this is a great resource to help you prepare for aging.
If you are an organisation working in the aged care sector, we encourage you to look at the site to up skill so you are aware of how to work with people aging with HIV.
