My name is Ashleigh, and for the past two months I’ve been testing members of our community for HIV, syphilis, and other STI test which we offer at the Positive Women Inc. clinic. I’ve always been passionate about working with people and have done plenty of community development work, so being part of a kaupapa that supports vulnerable communities and helps protect our community feels like a real privilege.
I really enjoy meeting people from all walks of life and helping them take a proactive step in their health. The core of the job is connection—building trust, answering questions, and making sure those who walk into our office feel supported whether they’re here for a test or just seeking information. I love it when people leave the session a bit more educated than when they arrived. We share practical information on how the test works, what the results mean, and steps to take if they need follow-up care. For me it is important that anyone coming in for a test, feels empowered rather than overwhelmed, or scared and lonely in some cases. It’s rewarding to see understanding grow in real time: clarifying myths, explaining window periods, discussing confidentiality, and pointing them toward resources that fit their needs to best protect them and their sexual health. On many occasions I have handed out our multilingual flyers which has come very handy.
Beyond the clinical side, it’s about providing a trustworthy, nonjudgmental space for information and support, so more people know where to turn when they want to learn, test, or access care.
