The first in-person gathering for HetMAN NZ, a support network for heterosexual men living with HIV, took place in October this year. For those who attended, it was more than just a meeting, it marked the beginning of a space many men have been missing for a long time.
HetMAN NZ is part of a joint initiative between Positive Women Inc. and HetMAN Australia, developed to ensure heterosexual men living with HIV have access to peer support that feels relevant, safe, and welcoming. While support services exist, many heterosexual men report feeling overlooked or unsure where they fit, which can lead to ongoing isolation.
Living with HIV as a heterosexual man can come with unique challenges. Fear of stigma, concerns about disclosure, and worries about being judged or misunderstood can make it difficult to seek support. Social expectations around masculinity can also make it harder for men to talk openly about health, emotions, and vulnerability. As a result, many men carry their experiences quietly and alone.
The October gathering highlighted just how important a dedicated space can be. Men were able to connect with others who shared similar experiences, build trust, and enjoy a sense of mateship in an environment designed with care and respect. One participant shared:
“Being with this group made me feel so comfortable and welcomed. The supportive space helped me relax, connect, and feel at home. I’m grateful for the chance to share this journey with others, and I’m looking forward to continuing to grow together.”
This first gathering confirmed that HetMAN is meeting a genuine need, not only for information or support, but for belonging, understanding, and connection. It represents an encouraging step forward, and we look forward to seeing this network continue to grow and support more men over time.
